The Negotiation of Borders between "Religion" and "Spirituality" : The Case of the Czech Spiritual Milieu
Original language description
The study considers those sociological conceptions of new, detraditionalized forms of spirituality which puts these forms in contrast to established religions. It discusses (and doubts about) the usefulness of the dichotomy "religion versus (detraditionalized) spirituality" which is sometimes employed within sociology of religion (e.g. Heelas, Woodhead 2005). The study is based on qualitative research of discursive strategies of Czech spiritual seekers and analyses the ways of inventing, maintaining aswell as challenging of the boundaries between detraditionalized spirituality and institutionalized religion in their accounts. Additionally, it considers the question in what way is a distinction between "religion" and "spirituality" employed in self-presentations of participants in the spiritual milieu and analyses the instances of interactions between "religious" and "spiritual" identity.
