Pandrogyny: Deconstructing Bodies, Genders, Identities
Original language description
Pandrogeny has become a new social phenomenon of identity deconstruction and thanks to media it has created a new upheaval in queer communities. It is 'a process' of two (and more) people undergoing a series of cosmetic surgeries to 'look' like each other because they 'are' each other. The word 'process' is crucial here as it presupposes the fluidity of identity - an important concept for this discussion. According to Genesis P-Orridge, one of the prominent figures that represent this phenomenon, pandrogeny is a way how two people can become one. The pandrogyne becomes a symbol of unity and inclusiveness. In the dominant discourses, cosmetic surgery represents medical consumption (marketed as cure for aging and out-of-the-standard looks); contrary to this mainstream body politics, pandrogeny becomes a tool for its deconstruction and thus reconstructs new bodies, genders and identities.
