Private/Public Dialectic in the Writings of Virginia Woolf
Original language description
Virginia Woolf mentions in her diary entry "how queer the change is from private writing to public writing" . She refers to the opposition between privately generated fiction and publicly available information occurring in biography. However, this private/public dichotomy appears also in her fiction and stands as the main subject of her writings. In this paper I will discuss the position of London in this dichotomy and the difference in its portrayal in Woolf's novel (Mrs. Dalloway) and personal diaries(The Diary of Virginia Woolf). I will also track Woolf's development towards the city in her autobiographical writings (Moments of Being).
