The Vietnam War as Video Game
Original language description
The paper examines the image of the Vietnam War in selected video games. Focusing on c. 10 games which have appeared in the last decade (Vietcong, Shellshock, Conflict Vietnam), it analyzes the games primarily as artefacts of popular culture, i.e. as a certain means of presenting history to the general public. In my analysis I focus primarily on the narrative strategies and the imagery used in these video games. In these two respects, the games borrow heavily from the most well-know Vietnam War films such as Apocalypse Now (1979), Platoon (1986) or Full Metal Jacket (1987): they strive for maximum realism and authenticity (in terms of mission design, the game environment, language, slang, or weapons), but also use similar soundtrack music (1960s rock)and often directly reference memorable scenes from the films.
