Shipwrecks on the Czech Sea: Tempest in Five Fits
Original language description
Shakespeare's The Tempest has had a remarkable cultural history in the Czech lands. Ironically, it was a rather turbulent and tempestuous one, as this article observes in five anecdotal fits based on archival research ? from the Austro-Hungarian era, from Czechoslovakia, and from the post-1989 Czech Republic. The focus on The Tempest and the anecdotic nature of my paper may seem fortuitous and arbitrary. My choice of The Tempest, however, is given by accidents that are historical; the play serves as a useful centre around which my observations on the cultural context and the tempestuous nature of Shakespeare in Czech.
