Aulus Gellius c. 125-170/180?, Roman Grammarian and Antiquarian : Katarina Petrovićová (Essay Date 2006)
Original language description
In the present essay, the author compares the cultural context of the Gellius's Attic Nights with that of Macrobius's Saturnalia, written c. 430. The two texts represent analogous turning points in Roman intellectual history: Gellius demonstrated a "unified Greek-Latin culture" unknown to previous generations (an accomplished synthesis of Greek and Roman worldviews), while Macrobius worked to reconcile pagan philosophy with the new state religion of Christianity.
