Being a Girl in a Moravian Village in the Eighteenth Century
Original language description
This paper examines lives of girls and young women in the village of Křenovice in the Slavkov Estate in the eighteenth century. The first stages of the life cycle (from the birth to the wedding) were a dynamic period, which was influenced mainly by the economic situation of the family. Most girls started to work quite early and changed their employers very often. A job could bring them improvement of their social status and useful experience for the future. In contrast, some young women were not so lucky and began begging or wandering. One of the most important decisions which could have been made at this life stage was the choice of a husband. The purpose of this paper is to find stories of individuals who made their own decisions and acted independently. Moreover, the relationship between these people and their families and the community is studied.
