The theoretically orientated paper deals with the core mission statement of museums in the recent period. From the end of the Second World War at the latest mankind has moved into a more dynamic phase of its development; the world is becoming in part a global village. The museum world rarely gets involved in world-shaking issues such as the problems of minorities, cultural identity, cross-cultural communication etc. and neither in the imminent issues of the protection of environment. Museums rarely getinvolved in the present. Another extreme is a "topical approach at any cost". New technology is most welcome (administrative communication, filing, conservation, protection, promotion, information provision etc.). Presentation is a different matter. Despite the technical revolution we are still given with our cultural codes another way. The reality was destroyed by the loss of link between the sign and the object.
