Do we see art the way the Byzantines saw it? With this question Herbert L. Kessler begins his „Preface“ for the book "Fantaziones". Visioni dell’arte bizantina. The answer stated immediately after is negative, since our perception of the Byzantine art is formed by the way of seeing defined by modern scholars. Additionally, the main moments of research, thinking and argumentation gradually clarifying this negative answer are presented, which emerged from the three significant essays written by Silvia Pedone, Aglae Pizzone and Valentina Cantone. Finally, Kessler mentions a contribution of Ivan Foletti to this topic - the broad context of how Byzantine aesthetics was understood during the nineteenth and early twentieth century.
