The Homeric theonym Hermes [Odyssey], with counteparts in Doric, Boeotic Hermas, Ionic Hermáo:n (Hesiod), Mycenaean dat. e-ma-a2 /Herma:(h)a:i/, gen. e-ma-a2-o /Herma:(h)a:(h)o/, is reconstructible as *Herma:ha:s. Already in 1848 A. Kuhn offered the comparison with the Vedic divine bitch Saráma:- and her two sons Sa:rameyás, serving as watchdogs to the God of Dead, Yama-. The purpose of the present contribution is to demonstrate that this comparison is valid from the point of view of both comparative mythology and etymology, plus new comparanda in Hittite sarmiya- "wild animal, predator".
