Intervention Effects: Negation, Universal Quantifiers, and Czech
Original language description
This article argues for an explanation of the intervention effect in NPI licensing which arises from intervening presuppositions. It focuses on two particular phenomena in Slavic languages: specific interpretation of universal NPs and neg-raising. In both cases existential presuppositions disrupt the licensing of NPIs, unlike the homogeneity presupposition. Both types of environments support Homer´s program where both presuppositions and NPI checking take place in time, so different types of presuppositions can interrupt the licensing of NPIs depending on both their timing properties. Moreover this article shows the existence of neg-raising in Slavic languages, invalidating previous claims of Boškovič and Gajewski to the contrary.
