Operatic Shakespeare on the Stage of the State Theatre in Brno
Original language description
The paper deals with staging of the operas based on Shakespeare's plays. The 2nd half of the 20th century in the State Theatre in Brno, especially in the 60s and also the 70s, is often considered a period of progressive dramaturgy in opera staging. Since1952, the leading personalities Václav Nosek and František Jílek tried to deal with the opera mostly as a theatrical genre. The idea of opera as total and synthetic theatrical genre permeates the work of outstanding Czech directors (e.g. Miloš Wasserbauer). This way of handling of the opera is also recognizable in their cooperation with scenographers Josef A. Šálek, Vojtěch Štolfa, Ladislav Vychodil etc. The main purpose of the paper is to present and evaluate the productions of Shakespearian operas (by Verdi and also by Czech authors) in the context of history of the regular ? today "national" ? theatre in Brno. The special interest lies in the scenographic conceptions of the productions.
