Contribution to the basic methodological questions (Ancient states and the states in the transitional period between Antiquity and the Middle Ages)
Original language description
The chapter introduces the main features of the ancient states of the Near East and the Mediterranean. These are treated as religious, political, and legal units. It deals with the typical features of a sacred kingdom in kin-based societies and states, the focus being especially on the evidence proving the existence of sacred kingships in Ancient Greece and Rome. Furthermore, the so-called barbarian Germanic states are characterized, as well as the pillars of their royal power and their mythic foundersand heroes. These are compared with the typical features of the so-called Attila's Empire.
