Sixty Years of the Janáček Philharmonic. Documentation on Its Past and the Philharmonic Now and in the Future
Original language description
Due to the need for regular symphonic orchestras, the Ostrava Philharmonic Orchestra was established in 1954, which is today's Janáček Philharmonic Ostrava. A separate chapter in this book deals with a phenomenon of educational concerts prepared by a long-term soloist (pianist) of the Ostrava Symphonic Orchestra and a major Czech composer of the second half of the 20th century Ilja Hurník. In the past, the Janáček Philharmonic Ostrava closely cooperated with Ostravian festivals of artificial music suchas Janáčkův máj (Janáček May), Svatováclavský hudební festival (St. Wenceslas Music Festival), and Ostravské dny nové hudby (Ostrava Days of New Music). Every year, the Ostravian orchestra was the main performer at these music festivals. The dramaturgy of the Janáček Philharmonic has always put emphasis on performing contemporary music of living composers from the region of Ostrava.
