Selected examples of laws (leges) approved by comitia preserved in the book VII of Livy's History
Original language description
The Seventh book of Livy's Ab Urbe Condita Libri may serve as a rich source of information for a historian who deals with laws (leges) in the period of Early Roman Republic for it contains great amount of examples of passing new bills and mentions of many existing ones. There we can also find the famous passage of text, which is considered to be Livy's definition of a lex in the period under examination ? this is dealt with in the first part of the article. The other part of the article gives selected examples of laws, such as laws concerning declaring of war or indebtedness of Romans, and provides mentions of laws that originate in the time before the period described in the Seventh book but are nevertheless referred to in this book.
