This paper explores how processing the streets of Rome was used by bishops to gain prestige in a city where processing was a traditional manner of attaining recognition. It further explores the processional dimension of episcopal foundations of the fifth century, and argues for a combination of procession and immobility being used to gain an iconic aura.
