Psychometric Properties of the Czech Version of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire

  • Original language description

The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire is a widely used screening instrument. The SDQ is a brief behavioral screening questionnaire that yields a Total Difficulties Score and five scales scores. Although there are a lot of studies investigating its psychometric properties, we present a complex study of the self-report, parent and teacher version of the SDQ in adolescents. The aim of our study was to examine the reliability (as the internal consistency), the construct validity, and the concurrent validity of all three versions of the instrument. The study was conducted on a sample of adolescents aged 11 to 16 years (N=680, 53% of females). Reliability was examined using Cronbach’s alpha and McDonald’s omega; the construct validity was examined by Confirmatory Factor Analysis; and the criterion validity was investigated by correlations with subscales of the Spence Children's Anxiety Scale (SCAS), Mental Health Continuum - Short Form (MHC-SF), and the Children’s Depression Inventory (CDI), and also by associations with teacher nomination technique results. The SDQ Total Difficulties scores and the SDQ emotional symptoms scale scores were associated with CDI Total scores and also with Emotional Problems scores, as well as with the SCAS generalized anxiety scores. The SDQ prosocial behavior scores of both the parent and the teacher form were associated with the teacher nomination technique results. The original five-factor structure was confirmed for all three versions of the instrument.
