Monasteries on the Horizon : The Sacral Landscape Through the Senses of Medieval Pilgrims
Original language description
The paper focused on the first encounter of a medieval pilgrim with a monastery on the horizon. It dealt with this problematic issue by examining the link between a sacral building, its surroundings, and pilgrimage roads (which were the places of cultural transfer par excellence). It argued that apotropaic power radiated from monasteries into their surroundings, and that the idea of good visibility from a distance manifested itself in conception of monasteries.
