Japanese Theatre in Czech Lands : Contacts, Receptions and Inspirations
Original language description
The initial goal of my research was to examine the Czech reception of those performances and explore any possible traces in the Czech theatre. But while studying the primary sources, I realized that a certain image of Japanese theatre already existed at the time and that the receptions were actually preconceived. Therefore, it was necessary to broaden my focus, to examine the sources of this image and to explore the discourse about Japanese theatre. The questions that my thesis explore is the following: How was the discourse about Japanese theatre constituted, what were its main factors and sources? What kind of information on Japanese theatre was published and where? What role in the discourse did live performances of Japanese artists play? The goal of my research is to collect, classify and analyze all the possible sources of information about Japanese theatre in Czech lands and later Czechoslovak Republic. The sources will be analyzed in a sociological and anthropological – primarily on the background of colonialism and orientalism – and also theatrological context. The thesis approach will be interdisciplinary. I intend to work on the boundary of theatrology and Japanese studies which should enable me to explore the topic on a more complex level. My research outcome should fill in the gap in the Czech theatre studies and serve further as a base research for other scholars in the theatrology, Japanese studies or cultural anthropology fields. Last but not least, it could become a useful source for Japanese scholars who study the reception of Japanese performers abroad or the wider perception of Japan and its culture.
