Zambrano’s Cave? A Reading of La tumba de Antígona
Original language description
My paper will deal with the philosophical drama, written in poetry prose, La tumba de Antígona (Antigone’s Tomb) (1967) of Spanish Philosopher María Zambrano (1904-1991). It begins with a reading of Sophocles’ tragedy, exploring, firstly, its political dimension—Ancient Athenian Classical drama as a place for discussion of political theory in radical democracy. Secondly, the article asks why Antigone has generated such fascination in Modern times, considering the otherness of the play, that their ideology and conflicts (i.e., those primarily of ancient 5th century BCE Athenian citizens) were not exactly ours. Then, the article explores Zambrano’s appropriation of Antigone, her “razón poética” and the phenomenological interpretation; it also mentions a 1943 article by the then falangista Antonio Tovar (editor and translator of the Sophoclean drama in 1942). Trauma, Civil War, fascism and migration are the ultimate ghosts in Zambrano’s text. The article finally reflects on what is trans-historical and what is not in Antigone as arch-tragedy.
