Le Puy-en-Velay : The Meeting Place of Nature, Divine, and Human
Original language description
After journeying by foot over more than 1500km, twelve modern pilgrims – students and scholars from Masaryk University – reached some of the most impressive artistic monuments of medieval France. The book Migrating Art Historians on Sacred Ways - of which the chapter entitled "Le Puy-en-Velay: The Meeting Place of Nature, Divine, and Human" is a part of - is structured as a walk along pilgrimage routes. It presents firstly the landscape, followed by liminal zones, before leading the reader inside medieval churches and ultimately towards the sacred. The chapter about the Le Puy-en-Velay tries to understand the role landscape has on the conception and perception of architecture, and more specifically, it seeks to explore the tight relationship between unique natural conditions and man-made structures of one of the most significant marian pilgrimage places of medieval France.
