Non-destructive survey of early medieval ramparts

  • Original language description

The investigation of early medieval centers is one of the principal tasks of Central European archaeological research. As part of a scientific project solution, geophysical surveys have been conducted on 10 different early medieval hillforts in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The main goal of these geophysical surveys was to determine the internal structure of the ramparts in the selected hillforts. The other aim was to check the efficiency of ground penetrating radar (GPR), electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and magnetometry on sites with early medieval fortifications. The range of results achieved on individual ramparts is well above expectations. By combining individual methods, several structural elements have been identified in detail in several ramparts. With the methods of ERT and GPR we have seen the original levels of the terrain, the stone and clay cores of the ramparts, the extent of the destruction of the stone walls as well as the character and depth of the outer ditches. Magnetometry in turn pointed to the presence of burnt parts of the ramparts as well as the differences between the ditches fillings and the surroundings.
