“Iron Curtain Up?”: Staging Shakespearean Operas in the Czech Republic after 1989
Original language description
Operas based on the plays by William Shakespeare constitute common part of the repertoire of Czech opera theatres. The operas by G. Verdi, based on Shakespear’s plays, include political dimension, supported also by scenography of the stagings. Otello, Falstaff, and especially Macbeth serve as a way of expressing the dynamics of rise and fall of those who seek to ascend to the power by any means. In my presentation I provide the analysis of the key concepts of stagings of Verdi’s adaptations of Shakespeare’s plays in connection to the historical and cultural contexts of the period. I especially discuss the metaphoric level of the operatic “transfer(s)” (adaptations and the particular stagings) of Shakespeare’s plays.
