Lithic Arrowheads of the Nitra Culture – The Use of Actual and Experimental Use-Wear Analyses to Identify the Differential Effects of Quiver Transportation
Original language description
The use-wear analysis of lithic projectiles of the late prehistoric period reflects both functional and social information. In this study, results of the use-wear analysis of more than 300 projectiles of the Nitra culture – part of the epi-Corded Ware cultural complex from east Moravia and southwest Slovakia in Early Bronze Age Central Europe – were compared with experimentally reached wear. The origin of pronounced use-wear traces on the Nitra projectiles was positively tested as transport wear. The experiment proved the distinct pedestrian mobility of archers at the dawn of the Bronze Age in the studied region. Several methodological difficulties that could have a negative impact on the results of use-wear analyses of projectiles is noted.
