Exile as a Means of Social Ascent? Brunoro della Scala at the Court of Sigismund of Luxembourg
Original language description
The paper focuses on the personality of Brunoro della Scala, an Italian exile at the court of Sigismund of Luxembourg († 1437). After a brief outline of della Scala’s biography, the author attempts to analyse three interrelated aspects of his career: Brunoro as (titular) imperial vicar of Verona and Vicenza and his unsuccessful attempts to seize control of these cities; Brunoro as diplomat of the King and Emperor Sigismund to the courts of northern Italy; and finally Brunoro as a “grey eminence” of the imperial court, encompassing his activities as an influential advisor, intercessor, and powerbroker. Thanks to the analysis, della Scala’s life, career, and position at the imperial court will become clearer.
