Slavic derived collective nouns as spatial and social clusters
Original language description
In this paper, I examine a puzzling property of collective nouns that they simultaneously evoke a sense of plurality and of singularity. Based on broad cross-Slavic evidence concerning two types of derived collective nouns, I argue that this property can be explained in terms of the mereotopological notion of cluster, which represents a structured plurality that can be perceived as a higher-order unit.
