Original language description
The study analyses the reception of Wyclif’s writings in medieval Bohemia, a topic that has fascinated both English and Czech scholars for centuries. Although many of the complexities of the relations between John Wyclif and the Czech Reformers have been explained, the methods currently applied by textual scholarship to understand the transmission of ideas in textual corpora are still based on the textual comparison in the broadest context. This study shows the limitations of such an approach. Based on several concrete texts authored by Hus at the Council of Constance, this analysis proves that the generally accepted hypothesis that in the course of his life Hus gradually quoted from and referred to Wyclif more often and more openly is not sufficiently accurate. Therefore, it suggests directions for a new line of research.
