One-Child Ethics as the Only Solution to Our Overpopulation Crisis
Original language description
The goal of the second of two Venice presentations was to present five roots of population growth and point out that four out of five roots can be addressed. The only root that should not be addressed is mortality decline which is desirable, and curbing it would be unethical and unacceptable. Unwanted fertility and coerced fertility are addressed and combated by voluntary family planning and the education and empowerment of girls and women. But, to achieve sustainability, even wanted fertility and population momentum needs to be addressed. For this, environmental ethics and education, and reproductive ethics (ideally one-child ethics) are of vital importance nowadays. Other measures that are helpful are lengthening generations and support of women who voluntarily decide to stay child-free (not child-less, which is stigmatizing). Again, the presentation concluded by the assurance that sustainability is possible but requires a sustainable humankind.
