And They Lived Happily Ever After : Challenging Marriage as the Only Option for a Happy Ending in “Under Nobody’s Thumb”
Original language description
A happy ending in romantic fairy tales often involves a wedding of the main protagonists, who are claimed to live happily until they die. This paper will look at a contemporary rewriting of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale “Little Tiny or Thumbelina”, namely Laura Lane and Ellen Haun’s “Under Nobody’s Thumb”, to discuss how the authors subvert the idea that happiness can only come from marriage reflecting the developing changes in attitudes towards women and the notion of marriage in their lives.
