Des son premier roman Deuils cannibales et mélancoliques (2000), Catherine Mavrikakis a partie liée avec le theme de la mort. Constatée, exaltée, métaphorisée, souvent comme une glorification baroque de la vie a contrario, la mort se déploie a travers son oeuvre qu’il s’agisse de Fleurs de crachat (2005), du Ciel de Bay City (2008), d’Omaha Beach (2008), des Derniers jours de Smokey Nelson (2011), du roman dystopique Oscar de Profundis (2016) ou de son roman d’espionnage L’Annexe (2019). Elle est présente aussi dans ses récits autofictionnels ou fictions familiales La Ballade d’Ali Baba (2014), Ce qui restera (2017) et L’Absente de tous bouquets (2020). La contribution tentera de cerner l’imaginaire de la mort, notamment les modalités de sa scénographie et de sa rhétorique.
