Narrative self-construction in autobiographical comics
Original language description
In this talk I will focus on the specific means of self-representation the medium of comics has to offer. Bringing together comics analysis, autobiography studies, and narrative theory, I will explore different ways in which graphic life narratives expose the illusion of a stable and unified autobiographical subject, foregrounding the view of self as a discursive and performative construct. In the final part of my talk, I will analyse Katie Green’s graphic memoir Lighter than My Shadow (2013), which enacts narrative self-construction as an interpretative and meaning-making process that can facilitate healing.
