Tracing the Neolithic transition through the lipid analysis of the first pottery
Original language description
Organic residue analysis of lipids recovered from pottery vessels in Slovakia indicates that they were used to contain or process various combinations of animal and plant products. The results demonstrate that lipid preservation in pottery vessels was influenced by vessel function, including food preparation, serving, and storage. Regarding food composition, we found no clear attribution to specific food commodity groups, which could result from mixing food or vessel reuse. A significant difference exists between Mesolithic and Neolithic foodways, with high freshwater and plant resource consumption in the Mesolithic and domestic animal products consumption in the Neolithic. However, we observed continuous processing of freshwater resources in the early LBK, deviating from the Mediterranean and Balkan models.
