Kymograph : Principle, Preparation, Use
Original language description
The video clearly shows the preparation and use of a kymograph from the early 20th century – a device that was of fundamental importance not only for physiology but also for experimental psychology. The kymograph, originally constructed by Carl Ludwig in 1847, enabled the accurate recording of biological and behavioral processes thanks to a rotating cylinder with blackened paper, on which a stylus recorded curves caused by various stimuli. The video shows the preparation of the recording surface, the connection of the pneumatic recorder with Marey's drum and Jacquet's chronometer, the use of a pneumograph to record breathing, and the subsequent fixation of the recording with shellac. The final part focuses on the actual reading of values from the recording, which required a combination of technical precision and researcher experience. The kymograph offered a fundamental advantage in its ability to objectively and systematically capture the temporal course of physiological or psychological processes – from breathing rhythm to reaction times. At the same time, however, it was limited by the mechanical nature of the recording: accuracy depended on the quality of the paper, the stability of the mechanism, and the interpretation of the curves. Nevertheless, it played an irreplaceable role in shaping psychology as an empirical science and laid the foundations for later, more sophisticated measurement methods.
