Jan Klusák and Jan Novák's inventions in the context of Czech music after 1960
Original language description
The text of this study concerning the form of invention in the output of two important composers, Jan Klusák (b. 1934), and Jan Novák (1921–1984), in the context of Czech music of the second half of the 20th century, combines several methodological approaches. Apart from presenting a comparative analysis of each of the two composers’ key aesthetic and compositional principles in dealing with the form of invention, the author sets their output in a broader context in the chronology of the production of inventions by other Czech composers and their international models. In that respect the present study aims at pointing to the variety of approaches to the form of invention in Czech music of the 20th century, as well as to the surprisingly extensive part of this production which has so far escaped comprehensive study. The present text is concluded by a comparative analysis identifying the completely different roles played by inventions in the compositional output of the two composers in its focus. Whereas for Jan Klusák, the model of invention has been a key compositional principle which constitutes a ubiquitous element of his lifelong pursuit, for Jan Novák inventions were a more or less episodic concern, somewhat paradoxically involving the employment of techniques of New Music. This study is dedicated to the composer Jan Klusák on the occasion of his 90th birthday.
