Emotions in political rituals and in Inner Asian tributary relations

Original language description

Enthronization or political recognition in tributary relations was always extraordinary event in traditional international or interethnic relations in Inner Asia. These political rituals were usually celebrated on the occasion of creating a new alliance, in connection of establishing new dynasty or with succession of new hereditary or selected ruler. Because of interconnected religious and political institutions, the event had always many symbolic features connected to religious justification of power. These features were connected to A) understanding of sacred statecraft, B) ritual communication with spiritual world and C) emotions of ritual participants. After the comments to the spirits and sacred state, this paper was mainly focused on participant emotions. The analyzed data were based on 1) classical texts with religious justification of power in royal edicts and on stele inscriptions, 2) historical events and rituals related to Second Manchu invasion of Korea in 1636 attested in the Diary of Na Man'gap. Analysis and comments of mentioned sources provided comprehensive picture about involvement of emotions in international political relations. The paper concluded that on one side international political rituals are important tool preventing violence in tributary relations, but on the other side and from long-term perspective these rituals are not able to mitigate consequences of direct attacks and hot stages of wars.
