Phonological constraint behind the clitic cluster reordering in the history of Czech
Original language description
The paper builds on previous claims (e.g., Sedláček 1994) that the grammatical clitic sequence „se-s“ for reflexive and 2sg auxiliary clitics, respectively, (e.g., „Zbláznil se-s“) is associated with the resolution of geminated „s“ in the expected string „s-se“ (a string similar to 1sg „sem se“). The sequence „s-se“ was attested in Old Czech, but its history hasn’t been described. The paper analyzes data from the diachronic corpus Diakorp v6 and shows that the sequence of clitics as well as prefixes and prepositions containing geminated „s“ (e.g., „sstúpil,“ „s synem“) were resolved around the same time. Finally, the paper proposes a tentative constraint-based analysis describing the observed phenomena.
