Adapting to Transformation: Czech Filmmakers and the Emergence of Multiplied Narrative Form(s)
Original language description
The paper explores the emergence and questions of the lasting impact of the so-called multiplied form of feature film narrative in Czech cinema. Tracing its origins to 1925, a pivotal year in Czech cinema, the paper delves into the convergence of disparate filmmaking art worlds, breaking down established narrative barriers. The multiplied form, characterized by my research as a multi-episodic, thematically linked plot, multi-linear narration, and a multi-protagonist fictional world, signifies a transformative shift in feature film construction. Czech filmmakers, competing in a burgeoning market, adapted this model, offering parallel variations that also offered structured yet, from a current perspective, unconventional methods of achieving narrative coherence and unity. This investigation reflects on the enduring preference for the multiplied form in Czech cinema and its broader implications for understanding cinematic narrative history. The paper also discusses connections with existing research projects of international narrative phenomena like "network narratives" and "multi-protagonist films."
