Special issue “Austrian Women Artists and Transatlantic Exchange in Design and Pedagogy”
Original language description
This special issue of The Journal of Austrian-American History is dedicated to the émigré careers of Austrian women designers and their contributions to various fields of the applied arts in the United States from the 1930s onward. It originates from the multi-platform online symposium “Creativity from Vienna to the World,” held in spring 2022, generously funded by the Botstiber Institute for Austrian American Studies, with the Austrian Cultural Forum as an event partner.1 The primary aim of “Vienna to the World” was to explore the role of Austrian artists and designers in American art education and design, thus examining the continuities of artistic and educational practices across both continents. One of the project’s guiding principles was to promote a more holistic understanding of the fragmented biographies and careers of Austrian women artists and designers before and after their emigration in the first half of the twentieth century.
