The chapter aims to highlight issues of female-on-female acts of vindictiveness portrayed by Atwood in her retelling of Homer's Odyssey, The Penelopiad. The main focus lies on the intergenarational dynamics between the two POV characters: the protagonist Penelope and the group character of the Maids, whom Penelope claims to view as her daughters. This affection does not hinder her from sacrificing the twelve young women to protect her own status. Implementing the theoretical framework of trauma theory, an overview of the portrayal of relationships between mothers and daughters in classical Greek tragedies based on myths, and feminist myth revisionism, the analysis focuses on the issue of internalisation of misogynistic, sexist and classist notions by Penelope, demonstrating these issues in her attitude towards other female characters in the novel, mostly the twelve Maids. Moreover, the analysis dismantles the myth of motherhood as a universal protective force and source of safety, validation and compassion, demonstrating the power dynamics and societal pressures embedded in mother-daughter dynamics.
