The paper explores the linguistic features of Czech Christological broadside ballads preserved in the collections of the Institute of Ethnology, Czech Academy of Sciences. It focuses on broadside ballads printed in the 19th century, whose origins mostly reach back to the 17th and 18th centuries. The study examines how this material reflects the coexistence and interaction of two linguistic traditions - the progressive Baroque Czech of popular and devotional texts (17th-18th centuries) and the archaizing standard of the Czech National Revival (19th century). Special attention is paid to the persistence of colloquial forms and to the factors that enabled their survival. The analysis demonstrates how this linguistic layer of Czech broadside ballads documents the dynamic interplay between orality and literacy and illustrates the development of standard Czech in the 19th century.
