The chapter explores the mechanisms and factors behind conflict resolution in the Old Swiss Confederation. It emphasises five main factors: a dense network of alliances with mutual influence mechanisms, a well-established arbitration system, conflict resolution strategies by moderate elites, fear of change, and a strong narrative of a common past. These factors collectively contributed to a system that maintained a fragile balance. Using the example of a long-term conflict in the alpine Canton of Glarus, the text provides a list of agreements and treaties from 1526 to 1837, illustrating the role of arbitration and mediation in maintaining peace. The internal politics were more aligned with leading economic powers than strictly confessional lines, and the political system, although not democratic, aimed to preserve the elites' power through minimal consensus. This complex interplay of factors helped the Old Confederation achieve its self-imposed purpose of conflict resolution and stability.
