The study explores the harsh stance of Cosmas of Prague against the Poles in his Chronicle of the Czechs (Bohemians). It argues that his account was shaped less by historical fidelity and more by the urgent political questions of his own time. Cosmas appears to have selectively drawn from the past, choosing episodes that could be conveniently adapted to suit his rhetorical and ideological aims. Around 1120, when he began writing his Chronicle, Czech society was in the throes of dynastic conflict among Premyslid dukes. Cosmas attributed these internal divisions to Svatava, the widow of Duke (from 1085/1086 King) Vratislaus, who was the daughter of the duke of Poland Casimir the Restorer. Unable to direct his criticism overtly against her, Cosmas embedded his disapproval within historical episodes drawn from the turn of the twelfth century.
