Special emphasis will be placed on the case of the Czech Republic as the only country in Europe in which the surgical treatment is practiced to the present day. Firstof all, background information on the historical use, the medical procedure, and the effects of castration on recidivism among sex offenders will be provided. In this part, the legitimacy and constitutionality of the treatment will be discussed. Finally, alternatives to surgical castration will be elaborated in an attempt to determine whether more appropriateoptions exist to address the treatment and management of sex offenders.
