Original language description
Th is collective monograph, as the title shows, deals with legal ethics. It provides a very complex perspective on the professional challenges facing contemporary lawyers. Legal ethics can be understood as an applied ethics in the fi eld of law. Th erefore, the book is divided into two parts. Th e fi rst one is devoted to an overview of the main ethical theories and general issues. Consequentialism, virtue ethics, Kantian ethics, ethics of natural law and ethics of human rights will be discussed. All of these ethical theories prove to be highly relevant to legal reasoning. Th is is illustrated on real-life legal cases. Special attention will be paid to the concepts of personal autonomy and human dignity. Indeed, these two values are in the spotlight of recent jurisprudence. Th e second part is devoted to the ethics of legal professions. Th e reader can get acquainted with the ethics of judges, attorneys, notaries, prosecutors and executors. However, this section also addresses many other issues including the professional ethics of lawyers in relation to media, professional ethics in legal education and ethics of academic work. At the end of the book some interesting theoretical and practical problems regarding ethical codes of legal professions will be discussed. Th is monograph is designed to provide the readers deep understanding of ethical theories and a solid grasp of the rules that are applied in legal practice. We believe this book will support a general interest in legal ethics. It can be useful for legal academics, students and also practicing lawyers. Legal ethics is very important for legal practice as it develops critical thinking, argumentation, sensitivity to legal values, professional virtues and sense of moral responsibility. It also strengthens the ideals, self-refl ection and value-identity of the legal community.
