Between and Beyond: Diasporic Media Spaces and Transnational Practices.
Original language description
This paper engages with the issue of international migration from the perspective of media studies, focusing on the role of transnational media for diasporic communities around the world. It pursues the idea that the advance of transborder communicationtechnologies have significantly contributed to re-configuration of global cultural geographies. Apart from diminishing nation-states' cultural and symbolical powers, these technologies have enabled various minorities and immigrant communities with the opportunity to escape the national communication spaces and re-connect symbolically with their lands and cultures of origin. Reviewing previous research and providing concrete empirical examples from various parts of the world, the author analyzes main structural features of these diasporic media spaces, concentrating mainly on the media consumption practices shared by the members of diasporic communities at the dawn of the 21st century.
