The Rise and Fall of Primaries in Slovakia: the Case of Slovak Democratic and Christian Union - Democratic Party
Original language description
This contribution is a case study of the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ), the only relevant Slovak party to introduce primary elections. The article focuses on the effects of this candidate selection method on two levels. First, it outlinesthe internal characteristics of the party, particularly the position of the leadership. Second, and given that nomination processes have potential repercussions beyond the space of the individual parties themselves, it also observes consequences at the inter-party level. Our findings are that in terms of power, primary elections did not create a competition for the party leadership and that the limited positive effects of the primaries could not provide a stimulus to other Slovak parties, one which might motivate them to introduce this mechanism into their own decision-making processes.
