From Adorno?s Theoretical Laboratory: On the Critical Concept of Class
Original language description
The paper explores Adorno's concept of class, sometimes well-hidden in the jargon of his prose. It argues that Adorno's treatment of the capitalist social objectivity is unthinkable without its anchoring in a historical form of a class relation. Therefore, class is for Adorno primarily a category upon which the capitalist social reproduction is premised, a determinate social relation, rather than an empirical abstraction that sorts out social groups according to some external criteria. In Adorno's oeuvre, one can find manifold contemplations, fragments and comments on class, however, a systematic reconstruction of the concept is missing. That is why the paper firstly focuses on those parts of Adorno's work where he discusses the determinate character of social objectivity and the concept of market exchange as a real abstraction in and through which individual human action is subsumed to validate itself as social.
