The festivalization of culture
Original language description
The Festivalization of Culture offers a deep dive into the world of contemporary cultural festivals – a world that is, as the book convincingly shows, far from being uniform. Whether small or big, urban or rural, open to masses or targeting specific niche audiences, over the last few decades festivals have been on the surge and they deserve to be studied as a present-day social phenomenon. While the homogenizing tendencies of globalization and capitalism have arguably turned some of them into sites of commerce and ready-made experience, others remain successful in promoting their unique sets of values and serving as vital sites of social interaction and community life. The core sensitivity developed in this book builds on this diversity and urges the reader to move beyond a dichotomic understanding of festivals as sites of either commodification of culture or cultural resistance and to pay attention to various ways in which festivals create, maintain, but also challenge cultural meanings in present-day societies.
