European Citizens' View of the United States : Does Trumpism Damage America's Image in Europe?
Original language description
This chapter analyzes how European citizens view the United States. In particular, it describes and explains the favorability of the United States’ image among Europeans since 2015. It then focuses on the question of whether American domestic political struggles around Donald Trump and his brand of Republican politics influence how Europeans view the United States. Using data from the Pew Research Center public opinion surveys and the Eurobarometer surveys, the chapter finds that there are three key factors influencing the United States’ image among Europeans: opinion on the American political system, trust in the American president, and whether America is a reliable partner in international relations. However, the chapter also finds that the negative impact of Trumpism on the overall image of the United States is much more pronounced in Western European countries than in the East. Overall, this chapter shows that the high-stakes nature of the 2022 elections extends to America’s image abroad and that Donald Trump’s style of politics has a negative impact on America’s image among Europeans.
