Smartphone vs. computer : How does the type of device affect survey response quality? (Czech Republic)
Original language description
The type of device used by respondents in online surveys (mobile phone vs. computer) can significantly influence data quality. This paper analyzes paradata from the Czech part of the Generations and Gender Survey (GGS) and formulates hypotheses regarding differences between users of different devices. The first hypothesis (H1) assumes that respondents using mobile devices will more often (a) fail to answer (e.g., leave blank or choose “don’t know”), (b) respond more quickly to complex questions, and (c) display a higher level of satisficing (i.e., providing fast and superficial answers). The second hypothesis (H2) expects more answer changes and returns to earlier questions due to frequent interruptions (e.g., notifications). The analysis links classical quality indicators with paradata-based measures. The expected results may show that mobile devices reduce attention on more complex questions and increase the frequency of answer modifications. The discussion offers methodological recommendations for designing questionnaires tailored to different devices and reflects on the growing role of mobile participation in social research.
